Location

Carate is located at the far end of the coast road that runs from Puerto Jimenez around the southern tip of the Osa peninsula. Drake’s Bay is 3 hours’ drive away, and it is 4 hours’ drive to the Panama border.

Puerto Jimenez is a 5-hour drive from San Jose, and it is served by multiple daily internal flights from the capital. Carate airport itself is accessible by aircraft up to Cessnas and Twin Otters in size.

Last Eden

It is hard to overestimate the importance of this property for conservation, not only at a local but also at a global level. In every niche of the Eco-system, there is a rarity in abundance, from tapirs and jaguars to monkeys and macaws. This Last Eden Rainforest represents Mother Nature’s final stronghold in Central America, and as such, it must be protected and preserved.

Biological Area

Due to its strategic location at the gateway to Corcovado National Park, this property is one of the keys to conserving the priceless forests of the Osa peninsula.

National Geographic has described the Osa as “one of the most biologically intense places on Earth.” It hosts more than 50% of Costa Rica’s plant and animal species, living on only 3% of its land area. 2.5% of Earth’s lifeforms are found here, on less than a thousandth of a percent of our planet’s surface area.

Preservation with a Purpose

The property’s unique location at the entrance to the world-famous Corcovado National Park gives it an outstanding potential as a platform for first-class sustainable tourism adventures.

Its over 300 acres of pristine forest are ideally suited for low-impact activities in harmony with the environment, such as jungle walks, wildlife-watching, and horseback riding.

There are 2 one-story buildings on the property that serves as a restaurant and bar and as housing for the current owners. The property has a water concession, and water is provided to the buildings by a gravity-fed tube system. The electricity comes from a generator.

The property can be accessed by road, by boat, and by air. Within its boundaries is the government-owned Carate airport, with an 800-meter runway.
